Your Co-Regulation Alpaca

Managing the physical symptoms of chronic illness/pain as well as the emotional turmoil – anger, fear, and grief - is exhausting and stressful. In some cases, like mine, nervous system dysregulation is actually an illness symptom. I actively prioritize joy, soothing, and ease to keep up with the challenges, and connection with animals is a huge source of resilience for me.

I recently participated in an “alpaca trek” in which I got to feed, hug, and hike with an alpaca. Alpacas stroll like they’ve never rushed a day in their lives, and stare at you like they totally get it - with the longest eye lashes I’ve ever seen. Alpacas are known for their gentle temperament and calm presence, so interacting with them has been shown to reduce cortisol levels (stress hormone) and increase production of oxytocin (the feel good connection hormone).  Cuddling all that fluff coaxed my nervous system into serene mode for days.

What helps you shift from dysregulation into a peaceful, chill, or joyful state?

Laughter, soothing, and gentleness are an integral part of my one-on-one Somatic coaching sessions and groups because these states are a balm for illness/pain. In some cases, tapping into joy, comfort, and ease can actually reduce symptoms but at minimum, can make life can feel easier and more meaningful.

I can’t offer you a co-regulation alpaca, but I do have a Somatic group for chronic illness/pain, and there are plenty of opportunities for connection, laughter, joy, and comfort.
