Higher (S)Elf Energy
Do you know the wise, compassionate, open-hearted, and clear seeing place in yourself? Everyone has it, even if it becomes obscured. I recently completed training in Somatic Internal Family Systems (often known informally as Parts Work), and the centerpiece of this healing therapeutic modality is this Self or Self Energy.
Our ability to heal, feel self-compassion, and be creative is the nature of the Self, which is not just an idea but an embodied state of being in which our breathing may be smoother and deeper, our body softer, our chest and heart area open, and the face relaxed. From a spiritual perspective, we might refer to this as our Higher Self.
In December, I jokingly shared that Iām working to be my Higher Elf, the energy in me that is joyful, creative, and ready to play! I like to find tacky holiday light displays and drink my vegan, sugar-free egg nog (observing my migraine dietary restrictions). I occasionally don my elf costume for added glee and silliness
The ability to laugh and be silly is an important part of my vitality in the face of chronic illness/pain, an experience marked by weariness and grief. I do somatic practices to access my peaceful, quiet wise Self, but playfulness helps me feel vibrant and alive, which is an essential part of embodied transformation.
I bring this penchant for laughter and silliness into Somatic coaching because (S)Elf energy brings healing levity and embodied resilience into the heaviness of trauma, oppression, and chronic illness/pain. How do you find your (S)Elf energy? And what does that add to your life?
