New Year, New Energy, Time for a Nap

The beginning of the year can offer a turning of our energy towards fresh and new ideas, goal setting, and planning. Many people harness that energy into New Year’s Resolutions, which are often fraught because they are usually about doing or being something that we aren’t already embodying. We live in a consumer culture that attempts to monetize those efforts that are often focused on changes to our bodies. Lose weight by paying for this diet plan, sign up for a gym membership so you can be fit and find the new you, or buy these cute new clothes in a smaller size.

We are bombarded by messages to buy, earn, or achieve — reminding us that we’re too much or not enough.
How confusing and exhausting to find our own deepest desires in the midst of all this.

For those of us in the northern hemisphere, we’re also at the peak of Winter, so hibernating, turning inwards, reflecting, and watching Netflix can feel preferable to mobilizing into high gear energy levels. As a person living with chronic illness, managing pain and fatigue means that the only thing I can consistently mobilize for each day is a nap. (Is that why I get all of these Facebook ads encouraging me to buy a more comfortable pillow? 🤔)

When we bring awareness to the sensations and life of the body, we can harness our own energy and longings towards what matters most to us. Finding our own aliveness and energy and generating more of it does not require that we buy, earn, or achieve anything. To be clear, if you feel most called to buy or achieve something, great! If making space for rest reflection, and quiet resonates with you, revel in that!

What would be ideal is if the investment of our time and energy was sourced from deep within us versus from the barrage of messaging around us. Let’s consider what enlivens you, even if it’s a nap.

It might help to ask:

  • What do you want to put your energy toward?

  • What are you called to?

  • What piques your interest?

  • What experience do you want to have?
